Pastor Terry switched careers midlife to pursue a call to full-time congregational ministry after a 24-year career in Mental Health and Social Work, which included a Masters in Social Work degree from the UW and 10 years in a group private practice he co-founded. While working toward his M.Div. at St. Paul School of Theology, he  served a wonderful 2-point (churches) charge in Iowa. His passions include working with a strong and diverse worship planning team to present engaging, thought-provoking and multi-sensory worship, and spiritual formation. Believing the Bible’s central theme is relationship development, deepening and reconciliation, Terry makes  visiting with small groups and individuals  central to his ministry. Having grown up outside the church, he was blessed to marry his wife, Dennie Sherman, in 1977, and, following a two-month drive around North America that ended in Washington State, they began to attend church together. They are blessed by their two delightful daughters, Talitha Willow and Kelsie Rose, both of whom now live in the Seattle area.

Debbie joins our staff as Faith in Action Coordinator with 20+ years of membership and love for our church family. She served as a volunteer with Girls’ and Boys’ fellowship groups and Family Ministries, later joining the staff as Youth Coordinator with arguably the best youth group in the history of youth groups! With a commitment to service, she has volunteered with Skagit Literacy, the Conway and La Conner school districts, and most recently with Hospice of the Northwest. In her current role, she looks forward to building relationships and creating opportunities for our church family to put their faith into action both within our congregation and out in our local and greater community.

Debbie and her husband Eric have lived in Skagit county for the past 25 years and have raised their children, Amanda and Mitchell, in this beautiful valley. In her free time, Debbie enjoys anything with dark chocolate, traveling, cooking, and reading.

My husband Ron and I moved a couple of years ago from SE Alaska to Mount Vernon.  One of my favorite songs, “Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore” really spoke to me at the time of our move because I didn’t know to what “other seas” what God was calling me. It seems that He was calling me to be the church secretary here at the Mount Vernon First United Methodist Church. I was the volunteer clerk of session and quasi secretary at the church in Alaska so I feel this position was meant for me.

Ron and I have 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandkids. We love to travel and enjoy classical music. Other hobbies I enjoy are rubber stamping, knitting, gardening, spending time on the computer, and participating in bell choir, chancel choir, and playing the piano for early worship services.
